Butterfly Basics Mixed Media Card

Morning! I hope the weather is as beautiful with you as it is here this morning! I woke early and have come into the garden to write this blog post as it’s such a lovely day and I want to enjoy the cool before the sun breaks through!

Today’s card uses Stampin’ Up’s beautiful Butterfly Basics Stamp Set. This is one that I just keep coming back to as the imagery is so flexible, both for Clean and Simple cards, and more Mixed Media style cards like the one I’m sharing with you today. I know that people tend to shy away from this type of card sometimes as it looks more complicated than some of the more simple designs, but I would urge you to have a go as it’s easier than it looks and on this type of card it’s actually very easy to hide any mistakes you make anyway – just stamp over it or add another butterfly!

 Tutorial – Butterfly Basics Mixed Media Card

To create your card blank, start with a piece of thick Very Vanilla cardstock (until 1st June this is only available as the free gift that comes with the Eastern Palace Suite bundle, but will be available to buy on its own in the new catalogue). Cut it in half to get an A5 sheet, and score and fold the A5 piece in half to get your card blank.

Cut another piece of Very Vanilla cardstock 1/4″ smaller each way than your card front. This is the piece that you will do your mixed media on. The Silicone mat is very useful for doing mixed media as you can work on this, and then just run it under a tap to wash away any excess ink, but if you don’t have one you can work with a piece of scrap paper under your project.

Use the top right hand stamp in the above image (the one that kind of looks like a mesh) and crumb cake ink to stamp all over your piece of card. Over the top of this, stamp the circular stamp, also in crumb cake ink, randomly in a few places across the card. Using a piece of sponge (I usually cut mine into quarters), sponge some crumb cake ink in a circular motion onto the edges of your card.

Use Pear Pizzaz ink to stamp a selection of the ferns in the bottom right hand corner of the card, then go back to your Crumb Cake and stamp the strip across the bottom.

Stamp the Happy Birthday sentiment in Versamark ink and heat emboss it with Copper Embossing Powder. Then, ink up just small sections of your strip stamp with Versamark ink, stamp this on top of the crumb cake one and heat emboss it. Using a piece of sponge, lay a little versamark ink around the edge of your card and heat emboss this in copper also.

To create the butterflies, use Wisteria Wonder ink to stamp 2 small butterflies directly onto your card, and then a large one onto a scrap piece of Very Vanilla card. Use the Butterflies Thinlits Dies (or a pair of scissors) to cut around the large butterfly. Wrap the centre of the butterfly with a little Linen Thread and stick it to your card using glue dots down the centre of its body. Lift the wings into the air.

To finish your card, wrap more linen thread around your decorated piece of card above your stamped strip, then stick it onto the front of your card blank.
